Daniel Monteith graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1964 with a degree in economics. He then followed with post graduate work in mathematics at the University of Waterloo. After working in the accounting and actuarial fields, Dan taught mathematics at both high school and university. He obtained his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall at York University in 1974 and was called to the Bar in 1976. In the same year, he joined the firm of Linton, Leck, Peterson & Monteith as a partner, which later merged with another law firm to become Stiver, Vale, Leck & Monteith. While at Stiver Vale, Dan built the litigation department into a 10 lawyer department and changed the traditional focus and concentration of the firm from real estate, estates and municipal law to litigation.
In 1994, Dan, Charles Baker and Russell Howe, founded the firm of Monteith, Baker & Howe, a firm exclusively restricted to litigation matters. Mr. Howe has since left the firm. Mark Johnston joined the firm in 1996 after articling with Clement Eastman in Kitchener. In 2002, William Doodnauth was called to the Bar after articling with the firm and joined Monteith, Baker & Johnston as an associate. In May 2004, Don MacVicar, who had articled and juniored for Dan at Stiver Vale returned to the practice of law at Monteith Baker & Johnston after serving for 6 years as an adjudicator with the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal. In 2007, the firm’s name was changed to Monteith, Baker, Johnston & Doodnauth.
Dan practices in most areas of litigation. He has been certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1989 as a specialist in civil litigation. Dan is a member of the Advocates Society, the Criminal Lawyers Association and the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association. He has served on the Bench and Bar Committee for Central East and was the chairman of the Fair Action in Insurance Reform Committee for York Region and South Simcoe County. Until recently, he sat on the Civil Litigation Specialty Committee of the Law Society of Upper Canada, which reviews applications for certification as a specialist in civil litigation. He has, when called upon, filled in for Central East judges in mediating lawsuits.
